Ask for recommendations, stalk socials, but always chat with your prospective celebrant in person or on video call, a good celebrant will welcome a chat because you have to feel really comfortable that the celebrant can tell your story and fits your vibe!
Questions to ask a wedding celebrant
Are you a full time celebrant, or is it your side hustle?
Do you do funerals too, or are you a dedicated wedding celebrant?
Where did you train? (Hopefully the answer will be the International College of Professional Celebrants residential, in person training and not an online course!)
Can I see your reviews please?
Are you insured?
What is the deposit and when is the balance due?
What happens once weāve booked?

A venue with an old fashioned training manual will say ānow go book the registrarā.
A venue with a modern training manual will say ābook a celebrant for your ceremony, itās much more personal and you can choose your own ceremony time, thereās no content police, so you can have the music and words of your choosing. Just book a 2+2 statutory ceremony for the registrar to do the legal registration, it costs Ā£56 and takes 3 mins and 2 witnesses to be legally registered as married.

Absolutely!
My service includes a certificate, you can sign, your witnesses can sign, even your dog can sign with an inky paw š¾

Most couples are surprised that to do the legals separately and have a celebrant led ceremony at your venue can be cheaper than having the registrar conduct your ceremony at your venue - and the value added by a celebrant is huge!
How much do registrar charge to attend your venue? Itās a postcode lottery, the fee for a registrar to marry you onsite at your venue are decided by the local authorities, so they will vary from area to area. Youāll pay more if your council has a budget deficit to make up!
My area is North & West Yorkshire, East Lancashire and South Lakes, so lots of different local authorities and lots of different registrar fees! But I try to set my pricing at around the average cost to have a registrar attend your ceremony, but remember with me you get so much more, because ordinary just isnāt a vibe! š§”

Not yet⦠but watch this space! The government announced on 3rd October 2025 that they were accepting the 2019 Law Commission Reports advice to licensing celebrants to be able to conduct legal marriages. Donāt hold your breath just yet, it goes to consultation in 2026 so itās likely to take some time yet.
In the meantime a 2+2 statutory ceremony with the registrar for £56 is still a small price to pay for the ultimate ceremony freedom with me!
